Williamsburg, Va. – Drexel Field Hockey dropped its second Colonial Athletic Association game of the season with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of 18th-ranked William & Mary. The win improved the Tribe's record to 8-2 (2-0 CAA) while the Dragons dipped to 6-4 (0-2 CAA).
William & Mary scored the first half's only goal on Kim Hedley's sixth tally of the season. The Dragons managed just one shot and one penalty corner in the first half as they headed to halftime down 1-0. Drexel came out of intermission and generated more scoring chances as the Dragons fired seven shots and earned eight penalty corners in the second half. Despite the increased opportunities, the Tribe's two goalies, Gwen Hunter and Kristen Gillis, shut out Drexel as Hunter stopped three shots while Gillis halted two as they split time in front of the cage.
William & Mary iced the game with two goals in a two-minute span as Wesley Drew and Becky Van Zee each scored in the second half.
Drexel's Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) finished with nine saves in goal. For the game, the Dragons were out shot 15-8, but held a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.
The Dragons will return to Buckley Field to take on Hofstra in another Colonial Athletic Association match-up on Sunday, Oct. 1. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
